Complications and Outcome of Pregnancy and Labor

birth-laborThe pregnancy period of a woman might not have any problems but during the labor some complications could be encountered which may be alarming and must be treated with care. Here are some complications and outcome of pregnancy and labor.

Preterm delivery- One of the most common complications which are encountered by the baby is premature birth. Normally the full term pregnancy period is of 38-40 weeks. When the labor contraction is experienced before 37the week, it is called preterm labor. The outcomes of the premature delivery of a baby are immature lungs, respiratory problems and digestive problems.
Some pregnant women experience the labor which is normally longer than the normal. It usually happens in the first-time mothers. In case the amniotic sac ruptures then both mother and the baby are at high risk of infection.

Abnormal presentation-Another very common complication of pregnancy and labor is abnormal presentation. Presentation means that part of the baby which comes out first from the birth canal. It is experienced that some days before the labor, the position of the fetus is lowered in the uterus and the head comes out first but in some breech presentation is seen during USG before the due date. Breech presentation means the buttocks or feet are towards the birth canal.

In some babies, the labor is painful and very lengthy because of the larger size of the fetus head and bad positioning of the baby. Sometimes, in such cases the birth canal gets torn. If the baby has abnormal presentation then the mother is at the risk of having injuries to the uterus and birth canal and labor becomes abnormal.

Some other complications and outcome of pregnancy and labor are-

Premature ruptures of membranes- If the membrane surrounding the baby ruptures then there is high risk of infection of the baby.

Prolapsed umbilical cord- The umbilical cord passes oxygen and nutrients from the mother’s body to the baby. Sometimes this cord comes out through the cervix during or before labor and it could stop the blood flow through it. Immediate medical help is needed in this situation.

Compression of the umbilical cord- Sometimes, the umbilical cord can get wrapped around the baby and it does not get unwrapped on its own and harms the baby. This happens rarely. Sometimes, this cord gets stretched and compressed during the labor and the blood flow to the fetus is decreased.
